Artwork Description:
This painting is based on the study of a nude model which was created by Nicholaas Chiao in the Academy of Arts in Minsk. This was not a usual painting for him. In 2003 at the end of winter, the artist became ill with a pneumonia-like disease and has been staying home to treat himself. Upon stay, he was thinking a lot about death and the purpose of life. At that time he was not quite successful in his studies. He considered learning more from old masters and deploying raw umber grisaille underpaintings for his academic works. Eventually, he cured himself and appeared in the Academy again to continue his studies. This work was the first example of his new style, influenced by old masters. It was quite a success that commanded some recognition from May Dantsig, who was a Dean of the painting facility. May Dantsig was a legendary Belarusian painter and his approval was a serious award for Nicholaas Chiao. Years later he reworked this subject and increased attention to the apartment interior around the model.
