Artwork Description:
This painting originates from a nude study undertaken by Nicholaas Chiao at the Academy of Arts in Minsk, marking a pivotal moment in his artistic evolution. In the winter of 2003, while convalescing from a severe illness, Chiao found himself preoccupied with mortality and the search for meaning. His academic progress faltered, prompting a renewed engagement with the techniques of the old masters, particularly the use of raw umber grisaille underpainting. Upon his recovery and return to the Academy, this work emerged as the inaugural statement of his new direction, earning the rare commendation of May Dantsig, the esteemed Dean and a towering figure in Belarusian painting. Years later, Chiao revisited the composition, enriching the surrounding interior and deepening the dialogue between figure and space.
