Exhibition Description:
This section presents a selection of erotically themed artworks. Nicholaas Chiao began exploring erotic art as a student in Belarus, initially focusing on academic studies of the nude body that emphasized shading and form rather than eroticism. These early works depicted ordinary individuals, eschewing pop culture references or celebrity subjects. After relocating to the United States in 2006, Chiao produced a series of more realistic portrayals of women in a classicist style, marked by heightened realism and a greater focus on sexuality. From 2010 onward, his approach evolved into a modernist tradition of erotic art, drawing on the work of Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Gustav Klimt, and Pablo Picasso. In these later works, Chiao emphasized sexuality through more developed character studies. Notable pieces include the diptych Together in Marriage and Plans of Life and Death, which depicts a couple as newlyweds and again many years later, as skeletons still united in love. Other significant works, such as New Olympias and Sisters, are monumental figurative compositions that examine contemporary identities and the complexities of modern life.
