This study forms part of Chiao’s ongoing dialogue with the legacy of Pablo Picasso. Aspiring to create works in conversation with The Demoiselles d’Avignon and Guernica, Chiao’s neo-cubist portraits both honor and challenge the Spanish master. For Chiao, Picasso stands as the quintessential model—an artist who traversed myriad styles and subjects, embodying the restless spirit of modernity. The tradition of artists learning from and reinterpreting their predecessors, as Rubens and others did, is central to Chiao’s practice. This composition, depicting young women amid the gardens of suburban Minsk, draws upon both lived experience and the enduring lineage of artistic exchange.
