Artwork Description:
This study is a part of the artist's dialogue with the oeuvre of Pablo Picasso, Nicholaas Chiao wanted to create analogous paintings to The Demoiselles d'Avignon and Guernica, and his neo-cubist portraits are also a challenge to the Spanish Master. In Nicholaas Chiao's opinion, Picasso is an ideal prototype for any artist to follow. He was active in many styles and covered all subjects of modern life. We cannot evade doing the same, but in different ways, upon the example of his success. A lot of old masters were educated on one another's artwork, they directly copied each other and sometimes incorporated whole scenes and fragments as new compositions. It is known that masters like Rubens and many others scholarly copied other earlier masters. This is why they achieved some progress and superiority in arts. Pablo Picasso for Nicholaas Chiao is also an old master, a teacher whom he patiently follows. This composition with young women outdoors was inspired by real-life encounters with the beauty of gardens in suburban Minsk and painting women in nature, which was a bright experience Chiao had during his time at the Academy of Arts in Minsk.
